Works from a variety of cultures are housed in this museum, including Maori, American, and Indian. The vista from the ninth-floor observation tower is almost artwork in itself, as is the renovated, copper-clad building, which was refurbished after an earthquake in 1989.

The De Young museum recently re-opened in a state-of-the-art modernist building (and it's almost worth it to go just to see that). While you're there, check out some of the incredible exhibits they host, from Andy Warhol to King Tut.

I was a young boy the last time King Tut came through the states and I so badly wanted to see the show. I was very happy to see the exhibit at the De Young in San Francsico. Yes, there are lines and crowds, but it is managed nicely and in the end, you have plenty of time to go through and I was able to get right up to the exhibits without any problem. The exhibit itself is set up wonderfully, with each glass box affording an area for a complete walkaround. It walks you through many themed areas and gives a good overall feel for the political climate that Tut ruled over.
